“Casey, what the hell are you doing here!?”
It’s 3 AM, and he’s just standing there in front of my door like a cat without shelter.
He’s been bonking on my door for the past 15 minutes, and after a good try at ignoring everything that had to do with him, I had to get out of bed and open it. Why aren’t pillows soundproof?
“I..I need your help… I’m sorry if I woke you up...” He responded, nervously.
If..? IF!? He expects me to be awake at this time? What did Don and Chase tell this guy about me? Urgh.
I ran a hand over my face. It was still warm from being under the covers.
“Well, yeah, you did. What’s the problem?” I could feel my throat burning as I spoke. It was way too early for speaking. Or too late, depending on how you look at it.
“It’s...It’s my parents.” Casey sighed deeply. He woke me up for that?
“They’re coming over tomorrow, for business. They don’t know that I work here. In reality I’ve lost contact with them. I haven’t seen or spoken to them for over 8 years, Dan. I.. They can’t see where I work. They’d kill me.”
Some explanation that was. So, he’s scared his parents won’t agree with his job as a mercenary. Big deal.
It’s not like they’ll come onto the battlefield tomorrow. They’ll be nice and cosy in the administrator’s office talking about money and whatnot.
Still, I couldn’t help but feel bad for the guy in front of me. I know he has severe anxiety, and most likely a ton of other mental disorders. He’s had a pretty terrible past. Most of us do, anyway.
“Okay, so, what do you want me to do about it?” I crossed my arms after rubbing my eyes a little. Great, I’d been awake for so long, going back to bed wasn’t an option. I wouldn’t fall asleep anymore anyway.
“C-could..Could you help me make sure they don’t see me?” He flinched as he said that, expecting to be hit. Why would I do that?
I slowly nodded, deciding to play it cool. He looked nervous. “Maybe. I know a guy that could get you a day off tomorrow. But someone has to take over in your absence. Ya know anyone?”
Before I’d finished my sentence I noticed him staring at me with puppy eyes. Me? Oh no. This was my only day off for the coming 2 weeks. You can’t just expect me to…
I’d agreed before I’d even noticed it myself. Why am I so bad at ignoring these things?
“Go get Risque, we’ll need him for this.” I added. A spy would really come in handy if this wanted to work out.
Casey seemed ecstatic. Whatever floats his boat, really. He nodded and ran off towards the other barracks.
I quickly threw on my trackjacket and put some actual pants on, deciding I may as well go for a jog.
I raced past the train tracks only a few moments later. Snakewater had some nice training fields, for an abandoned factory. Today though, I guess it wasn’t meant for me.
As I reached the front lines, not caring about entering enemy territory as per usual, I found myself staring right in the eyes of multiple robots. I froze instantly.
They’d never patrolled this late before.
Luckily they hadn’t noticed me. I quickly hid and decided to turn the short jog into a spy mission.
The three robots seemed to be escorting three people. One robot bodyguard per person. I recognized some of the faces.
The first two, a man and woman, middleaged, both looked like Casey. Especially the woman did. The last man, much taller and a lot stronger, looked to be related to Don and Chase. He had the same facial features, though his jawline was a lot thicker and he had a tanned, Italian skin.
“Are you certain they haven’t noticed us?” The man who resembled Casey asked, with a light Bostonian accent, to which the taller man nodded.
“I’ve made sure of that. The ones that are normally awake have been sent away.”
The smirk on the man that resembled Chase’s face grew as he said that, and it unsettled me.
He had a thick Italian accent. I’d figured as much, really. He looked the part. Maybe they were planning an invasion on our base?
It didn’t take long before I felt something on my shoulder. I wanted to scream, but the moment I opened my mouth it was covered by a hand.
I felt the leather of vambraces on my neck. Only one person I knew actually wore those things nowadays.
“Be quiet. I came as soon as I could.” Risque whispered, his French accent only silencing his voice even more.
As soon as he let go of me I smirked, whispering back.
“You know I can’t stay silent. Besides, those robots are as deaf as ever.”
He rolled his eyes, crouching down next to me. His eyes were fixated on the taller man.
“Ya know who he is?” I asked, trying to keep my voice low. It was proving to be difficult.
“Oui. His name is Raphael Gemini Firezia, he’s the head of the current mafia and here to ‘negotiate’ with Gray.” Risque responded, a low growl apparent in his voice.
I knew that Gray had some shady things going on, but working with the mob was unexpected. He’s done cruel things in the past, though. That’s why we’re fighting against him. The Administrator just pays our cheques.
“Negotiate about what?” A new voice said. I knew who it was immediately.
Casey sat down behind Risque and looked at the three strangers as well, his eyes widening at the sight happening before us. He fell over backwards, making quite some noise. I flinched as I heard it.
We had to move.
Risque knew it too. I saw it in his eyes. He quickly grabbed a hold of Casey and gestured me to follow him, which I obediently did.
I could hear the robots searching the bush we’d just been behind as we ran back towards the barracks. Risque dropped Casey there.
The scout’s face was pale, and he could do nothing but stammer. We helped him calm down a little.
“Those were your parents, weren’t they?” I heard Risque say.
Casey nodded, wiping some tears from his cheeks.
His hands trembled. His whole body did.
“But that means your parents are mobsters? What the hell?” I stated the obvious, and was immediately hushed by Risque.
Casey looked like he was having a heartattack as he heard me. It didn’t take long before he burst out crying, curling up into a ball to the best of his ability. This was definitely some trauma from his past.
If looks could kill, Risk would’ve had me dead on the ground right about then. He quickly tried to calm Casey down, but the poor guy swatted the Frenchie’s hands away.
I facepalmed. Great. Why did I have to be so blunt?
“Look, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.” I started, but it didn’t help much.
I decided to just shut up after that fiasco.
As Risque tried to help Casey, I got up and went outside. The cold night breeze hit me in the face harder than it had before, and I shivered. It was gonna be freezing the rest of the night.
Usually when I’d screwed something up, I’d go to either Don or Chase to either get my mind on something else or to get advice.
Tonight was no exception.
“Chase?” I asked as I knocked on his door. By then it’d turned 6 AM.
He opened it, and I noticed how he was staring at me with a questioning expression. I was never up this early. I figured it’d be the best to just let him know about it all.
“Last night, the strangest thing happened.” I began.
